The Kama Sutra was written for the nobility of India by a nobleman, Vatsyayana, at some time between AD 100 and AD 400.
According to the text, the ideal citizen was supposed to dedicate his life to achievement of three goals: dharma (the acquisition of religious merit), artha (acquisition of wealth), and Kama (acquisition of love or sensual pleasure).
